The Denel Company produces Royal brand compotes, jams, purees, fruit juices... They produce around 130 m3 of highly concentrated effluent every day (5.6 g TSS/l), treated by a treatment plant combining a Sequenced Batch Reactor and four vertical flow treatment wetland (250 m² each) working in parallel. The treatment wetland part has been implemented in 2019 to upgrade the existing system that was not satisfactory for both treatment quality and sludge management issues (designed by EcoBird and constructed by COTRAM Assainissement). The TW provides: i) the separation sludge and the treated water, ii) a completion of the effluent treatment, and iii) drying and mineralization of the sludge over years. The whole system is regularly monitored by Denel company which allows a good feedback on the TW performances.
La Chapelle treatment plant is composed by a Rhizosph’air process. It is a one stage forced aeration treatment wetlands receiving raw wastewater and treating sludge and water. Designed for 900 p.e. it is a good alternative for limited available area and/or stringent outlet requirements. It is the first aerated filter (Rhizosph’air© patented technology) treating domestic wastewater in Martinique island with a total surface of 900 m² planted with Heliconia Psittacorum. It was designed by EcoBird and constructed by COTRAM Assainissement; the system is in operation since 2023. It has to comply for 20/125/30/8 mg/l for respectively BOD/COD/TSS/TKN as well as 1,000 cfu/100 ml for E. coli and enterococcus. For pathogen treatment, a final UV disinfection step is implemented.
The municipal wastewater treatment plant at St Joseph municipality for the residential area of “Les Bords de l’Etang” is composed of a single stage of unsaturated/saturated vertical flow TW treating raw domestic effluents. Designed for 544 PE, it is in operation since 2020. The two parallel filters are planted with Heliconia psittacorum, which allows a nice integration into the landscape. Such classical implementation is the result of 10 years of research adaptation on TW for tropical climate and is representative on the new application of TW in Martinique island and all the Caribbean region for a decentralized approach.
